8 Days of Giving – A ZeVin Creations Challenge

It is that time of the year where everyone “SHOULD” be in a giving mood.. and we’d like to encourage our readers to achieve the goal of using their GIVING spirit!  We started this challenge back in 2007 and we had a good response so let’s double the efforts of everyone giving back unto others when people need it the most!

For these 8 Days left before Christmas we want to challenge you to GIVE to others during this season of giving which of course is the true reason of the holiday season.  In my personal opinion, it isn’t about getting all these gifts and spending tons of money but to be with your loved ones and do for others however you can.

These next eight days I’ll post how ZeVin Creations has done something to make a difference in another person’s life.  We will also provide some suggestions on what you can do…  We hope that you our readers will also post or comment on what you did each day…AND in exchange we will randomly select from the comments to get a FREE CARD from us each day (that’s a total of 8 Cards we are giving away).  Can I just repeat — 8 FREE CARDS!

So here are some suggestions –

  1. Shovel snow from your neighbor’s driveway and sidewalk (unfortunately we didn’t get much snow here but hoping)
  2. Volunteer your time to help a local homeless shelter or food pantry
  3. Bake some cookies and/or candy for your postman, garbage man with a card expressing your thanks
  4. Pay for a cup of coffee/tea for the person behind you  at your favorite coffee shop
  5. Put extra money in the parking meter for the next car to park.
  6. And an easy way — just say hello to everyone you see!

Today I put extra money into two parking meters — typically I walk to my yoga course but I was running late so I decided hey since I’m driving I can give the change I had brought for another purpose and put it in the meter longer than my hour class.

Take this time to inspire others to make a difference this holiday season and you’ll in exchange be rewarded within your spirit knowing you impacted someone that wasn’t expecting it!(And possibly a FREE CARD)

Ahh time to relax – just a little

Good Morning

I first want to say thank you for participating in the 8 Days of Giving Challenge.  I pray that it inspires all to try to give back often – I know I’m going to try to do something weekly to give back and at least blog about ways you can do a random act of kindness with cards or even in general.  Not sure if you noticed the coments but if you have time review what everyone did or experienced!  To all that participated I’ll be mailing out your free card this weekend.

And I forgot to post what I did on Monday — I finished my handmade creations(which I didn’t remember to take pictures of before handing out)… And gave some extra money to the Salvation Army… and we gave our postlady her present of thanks!

Now that the Christmas stres has passed it is time to prepare for the new year — plan shows to apply for, get finances for 2007 documented, and work on goals for 4th year!  I am glad that I’m off these next couple of days so that I can achieve some of the big goals and clean our messy studio and temporary studio(our family room)… Over the next couple of posts I’ll also be discussing how you can implement sending cards within your new year’s resolutions – starting now after getting your holiday gifts.  Now I’m off to get a little bit of rest…

8 Days of Giving Day 6-7

Ahhh it has been a busy past 2 days.. I admit I’m one of those last minute shoppers but it was great knowing I wasn’t the only one…saw on the news that 40% of shoppers were just starting on Saturday…. at least I know my shopping for stuff is related to things I needed to make items… So I’m taking a break from my making of presents to remind you Monday is the last day of our 8 Days of Giving Challenge which we started on Monday December 17.

These past two days my way of giving back was via my spare change — I have been allowing my daughter put money in the Salvation Army bucket whenever we come across one and so I increased the amount she gave so that it became dollars rather than cents… I know that the Salvation Army does a lot in our neighborhood and they truly need whatever anyone can spare.

My suggestions for you tonight is to really follow what your heart guides you to do!  Here is a recap of what all the suggestions I listed during the challenge for a reminder:

  • Give money to a charity or organization that you are passionate about.
  • Donate your time and talents by volunteering with a non-profit organization.
  • Change your life a little bit so that your footprint on the earth isn’t as damaging.
  • Use your time on the internet as a way to help fund an initiative world-changing.
  • Say a kind word to someone while you are out and about (especially those catering to your needs).
  • Transport someone that can’t drive.
  • Send a card to someone you haven’t talked with in a long time OR you don’t even know!
  • Babysit for a couple of hours for new parents.
  • Smile at everyone you pass today — a smile is an instant warmth of someone’s heart!
  • Donate food to an homeless shelter OR buy some groceries/coffee for an homeless person!
  • Pay for a random stranger’s meal!
  • Take your co-workers a special treat — that you made!
  • Anytime a thought of generosity comes about – act on it!
  • Shovel snow from your neighbor’s driveway and sidewalk (unfortunately we didn’t get much snow here but hoping)
  • Volunteer your time to help a local homeless shelter or food pantry
  • Bake some cookies and/or candy for your postman, garbage man with a card expressing your thanks
  • Pay for a cup of coffee/tea for the person behind you  at your favorite coffee shop
  • Put extra money in the parking meter for the next car to park

8 Days of Giving – Day 5

I hope all have taken time today to give back to someone else!  As you know on Monday we started our 8 Days of Giving Challenge.  We had another comment yesterday that dealt with an instant chance to give back – I keep saying those are wonderful opportunities!

Well today I’m making my HANDMADE gifts for my daughter’s teachers.  I vowed that this year everyone would get handmade gifts except my little one for there were a couple of things I needed to get her that aren’t handmade….  And that is what I want to encourage people to do as a way to give back… buy handmade items for people!  OR better yet give things that inspire a creation to be made…

Naturally I’m going to say you can find so many handmade products at Etsy.com but you can find them locally in your hometowns in specific stores.  And if you want to go handmade in a different direction you can purchase homegrown foods!

Well I have to finish these gifts before I my daughter’s Christmas pagant.  I will post the pictures of the gifts later this evening!

8 Days of Giving – Day 4

I hope all have taken time today to give back to someone else!  As you know on Monday we started our 8 Days of Giving ChallengeYesterday we had a comment about helping a neighbor in distress and recently had a comment on something that wasn’t even planned!  I like those type of giving opportunities – for it catches you off card.. what are you going to do react positive or negative.  The comment from yesterday is the winner of our free card for Day 3 so check your email!

 branches-moved.jpg

Can you believe it is Day 4 and we only have 4 more days for the challenge to take place… It is actually kind of interesting reading people’s opportunities — so maybe this is something I can do again in 2008….  For today I finished my tree branch moving project!  Man it was hard today for these were the BIG branches…. my landlords stopped me this morning for they were like did you do that pile of branches — and I said yes I did.  They were like ohh you didn’t have to for we were going to pay those boys to do it.. for they were going to pay them. but they were like thanks so much. The picture of the pile is to the left…. it’s amazing how back in the day they use to do this no problem — I kind of felt like them women in the movie Cold Mountain when I was dragging them up to the driveway…

Today I want to offer suggestions that encourage you to “Give the Gift that Changes Lives” – a gift that will make a major impact on our world or someone’s life.  You know in our world’s current state of poverty, suffering environments, and fueding  countries – we all need to share our wealth be it with our finances, time, or talents.  The inspiring thing about sharing your wealth is it taps into our quality of selfishness  — we do things because we WANT to do it… we select things that we are passionate about and sense need some form of healing!

Here are some interesting sites I’ve come across:

  1. Etsy artist – Ellochka – is donating 20% of her sales to an animal shelter.  There are tons of artists/crafters out here who like to give back to their favorite cause which you can do searches on.
  2. If you are unsure of who a person would want you to give their financial gift to you can check out the site Just Give where they allow you to buy certificates to give to the recipient and allow them to pick their cause.
  3. The Seva Foundation – is a non-profit organization that with donations restores vision for a Himalayan or educates a Native American tribe on growing traditional foods.
  4. Naturally our soldiers need emotional support – take from me who has a couple of friends over there – Any Soldier – provides contact information for you to send items to a soldier.

8 Days of Giving Challenge – Day 3

Angel Noel

Good Morning

I hope all have taken time today to give back to someone else!  As you know on Monday we started our 8 Days of Giving ChallengeYesterday we had two more comments submitted which were wonderful ways to give unto another.  Once again since there were only 2 comments both participants are getting a free card!(If your reading this check your email for we sent you a little something)

Today I’m going to use my talent as a way to give back… I picked out a couple holiday cards we had leftover and I’m going to send them to someone I don’t know wishing them a joyous holiday season.  Now I am getting their names from our church’s sick and shut-in list — I have actually been wanting to send a set of random cards to persons on the list for sometime just never did it — and this is the ideal time to do so… You know there are many persons who might not have families to share this holiday season with and get very depressed so I hope that my  card uplifts them and encourages them to know that there is someone in the world who cares!

You know in my December YogaJournal there is a piece on 12 ideas to connect with the season and not be so stressed out – well #12 is what inspired me to do today’s action — Act Kindly, Randomly.  Quoted by a yoga teacher, Arthur Jeon, “The core of Christmas is the celebration of the birth of a prophet’s life, someone who taught love.  So then make an effort to truly practice that.”  My suggestions for today are stemmed around doing something random yet is kind to another person, animal, or even object.  In a way it is like we are all little angels walking the earth and doing good upon others… which in turn brings us a undescribable(sp) reward of compassion and peace.

I look forward to reading the comments today and I encourage you to participate in this challenge it is never to late to pay it forward!
