Father’s Day History & Contest

So just a reminder — Father’s Day is 2 days away (June 17, 2007) and the contest will end that night at 11:59PM.

Since we are going to be celebrating Father’s Day with our dad we wanted to go ahead and provide the history of Father’s Day tonight.

Father’s Day actually varies on date depending on what country you reside in (didn’t know that).  Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June which this year just happens to be June 17.

The first “modern” celebration for the United States was July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South.  There are a couple possible inspirations for the creation of Father’s Day whic include:

  1. A celebration of fathers after the deadly mine explosion in Monongah,WV.
  2. A way to honor Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart – who was a single parent rearing six children.
  3. To replicate the holiday Mother’s Day.

We will end this post with this great quote:

“Blessed indeed is the man who hears many gentle voices call him father!” — Lydia M. Child
