Spotlight of the Week: Akemi Designs

Little bit about company: Akemi (pronounced ah-‘keh-mee) Designs is for life’s occasions, a small social stationery company that pays attention to detail, uses high quality papers, and values its customers. From wedding invitations to birth announcement to greeting cards, Akemi Designs offers products that are not only practical, but beautiful.

Little bit of information about your products: Akemi Designs creates paper goods with an Asian flair–unique, fun, beautiful works of everyday art. Many of its products are embellished with fine Asian papers such as Yuzen hand silkscreened papers from Japan and Unryu tissue from Thailand, as well as getting inspiration from Eastern aesthetics for its designs.

How do you encourage “A Gift Within A Card”: I’ve always loved making cards ever since I was a child. I believe that a small, heartfelt card can convey more sentiment than a big, lavish gift. The written word is powerful and if it’s enhanced by a beautifully designed card, it becomes a keepsake to be cherished for a lifetime.

Recommended card for “Culture Appreciation” month: My most popular card is the Kimono Duo card. This is the card I give to couples on their wedding, but can be given for anniversaries, valentines, or anytime you want to celebrate love. Two Japanese silkscreened paper kimonos are joined by a gold heart. It is layered over Thai Unryu tissue that’s been hand ripped in a slightly abstract pattern and atop brightly colored origami paper on textured ecru cardstock.

Akemi Designs is currently working on revamping their website, making it easier for customers to purchase products and inquire about custom work. Many of their paper goodies can be found at their Etsy shop:
